People's Budget Assembly 1
Everything’s feeling wild right now with SNAP cuts and rising prices, ICE kidnappings, and billionaires getting richer while working families struggle. This Saturday we will gather to shape our vision for Boston, share resources and strategize to win tangible resources at the local level. We talked to 700 residents in the last few months and will share back what Bostonians want City Hall to invest in. We will decide on other community priorities and solutions for our needs. And you have a lot of insight you could provide by sharing your experiences, challenges and hopes. Can you join us?
Meeting Minutes
This Saturday we gathered for the FIRST Boston People’s Budget assembly where 120 Bostonians came together to dream, discuss and plan a future centered on care, solidarity and well-being. We decided that a People’s Budget is one that prioritizes investments into: Housing, food, youth jobs and programs, environment, health and mental health programs, support for elders and support for immigrants. And we want to fund those areas by divesting from the police budget.
The fight to increase money to community needs is a multi year fight. And for this year, WE DECIDED that we will prioritize budget solutions/investments to:
Housing
Food Access
Immigration Support
From now until March, working groups will meet to develop solutions and proposals for investments into those three areas and one working group that will develop proposals to divest from the police. In addition, we will hold monthly arts and culture gatherings to keep developing creative ways to engage even more Bostonians around our People’s Budget.
If you did not have a chance to fill out the pledge card at the end and sign up for a working group or take other actions you can sign up here. This was the Better Budget Alliance’s first assembly, and we want you to come back. Please share your feedback with us about what went well and what we can do next time to make the space more accessible, engaging, productive and powerful.
If you missed the assembly, you can still sign up to get involved in the next steps!
Finally, given that housing is our first priority and we need both budget and policy solutions, we wanted to share this chance to show support for the statewide Rent Control bill THIS week! There are multiple ways to support:
