Background and context (including, if applicable, where this idea came from):
This proposal was started by the immigration working group hosted by Neighbors United for a Better East Boston on Feb 6. There was about 20 participants. The group, after reading the ideas and needs named by residents at previous assembly, and the ideas proposed by resident on the city's Participatory Budgeting process. The working group also looked at existing programs and resources offered by the city.
This group talked about the current state of fear, anxiety, depression and loads of trauma that is affecting the immigrant community. Members of the group also shared that in school, students and friends anxieties and fears are just growing by the day. A member of the group mentioned that in her high school, there is a month long wait list to see a therapist while other young person shared that in her charter school, students can access a councilor or therapist with ease. This comparison sparked a conversation about the need of increasing mental health services in ALL public schools, as well as the city prioritizing FREE therapy or counseling for immigrants affected by current conditions.
Mental health services is a rapid response need to current conditions but the goal would be that any and all Bostonians can access mental health services for free.Proposal (including what specifically the money would be spent on):
